Sheffield is an industrial city in South Yorkshire, known predominantly for it’s steel industry, Snooker world cups, it’s football clubs, and electronic outfits, rock bands & pop groups bands, such as The Human League, Def Leppard and ABC. It sits at the southern end of the county of Yorkshire, and has a population of over 550,000. Many older buildings are built from the local sandstone, with new builds relying on wooden frames and red brick.
The city is governed by Sheffield City Council which was formed as a metropolitan borough in 1974. It became a unitary authority in 1986.
