West Oxfordshire, known as West Oxon is a local government district in the south of England with a population of around 117,000. A mainly rural area with forests, its notable towns are Woodstock, Chipping Norton, Charlbury, Burfor, Carterton and Witney, where the local council is based. Like many local council the non-metropolitan district council of West Oxon was created in 1974 with the emerging of five former districts, which were abolished at that time, namely: Chipping Norton Municipal Borough, Chipping Norton Rural, District, Witney Rural District, Witney Urban District, and Woodstock Municipal Borough. Notable buildings in the area are Blenheim Palace, the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Kelmscott Manor is a limestone manor house in Kelmscott and dates from around 1570, and Oxford Castle is a large, partly ruined medieval castle, which was used as a prison.
The city is governed by West Oxfordshire District Council which operates from two offices – Council Offices, Witney, OX28 1NB for postal enquiries and 3 Welch Way, Witney, OX28 6JH for visitors. The council offices are where all matters concerning the district’s developments take place, including the local planning authority. It is also where West Oxfordshire planning permission and applications are processed.
