South Oxfordshire is a local government district within the ceremonial county of Oxfordshire. Like many modern counties it was formed in 1974, but unlike many it is a conglomeration of no less than six former districts, namely, Bullingdon Rural District, Henley-on-Thames Municipal Borough, Henley Rural District
Thame Urban District, Wallingford Municipal Borough, Wallingford Rural District. All of these old boroughs were abolished when South Oxfordshire District Council was formed. The river Thame joins the Thames in the district where its wide floodplains with few houses leads to less likelihood of flooding. Notable towns within its boundaries are Didcot, Henley-on-Thames, Thame, Watlington and Wallingford. Notable buildings are Watlington Castle and nearby museum, Dorchester Abbey, and Rycote House built in the 16th century.
The county is governed by South Oxfordshire District Council which has a temporary home at Abbey House Abbey Close, Abingdon OX14 3JE and this is where all matters concerning the borough’s developments take place, including the local planning authority, and is where South Oxfordshire planning permission is granted. Be careful through because there s a planning move to Didcot in the near future.
Plande works across the county and its surrounding towns and villages.
