Portsmouth is a port city and unitary authority in Hampshire in the south of England with a population of around 210,000. The city is quite unique as it sits on its own island called Portsea. Portsmouth has been a significant naval dockyard for centuries and can trace its origins back to Roman times. It contains the world’s first dry dock which was constructed by Henry VII in 1496. It became a city in 1926 after a long campaign by the city’s council. Portsmouth was a strategic site in both world wars. Heavily bombed by a Zeppelin in world war 1, and again by the Luftwaffe in World War II, it became a vital landing site for the D-Day landings. The housing stock was hit hard during the war but was steadily rebuilt during the second half of the 20th century.
The city is governed by Portsmouth City Council which is a Unitary Authority which was formed in 1997, separating it from the rest of Hampshire. Its boundaries were extended to cover the whole of Portsea before covering part of the mainland, namely, Paulsgrove, Wymering, Cosham, Drayton and Farlington in 1932. Many of the city’s landmarks are of a military or naval nature, such as the Royal Marines Museum, HMS Victory and the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
Portsmouth City Council operate from The Guildhall, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth, PO1 2AJ and this is where all matters concerning the city’s developments take place, including the local planning authority, and is where Portsmouth planning permission is granted.
Plande works across the city and its surrounding towns and villages.
