Oxford is a university city in the central south of England with a population of around 163,000. This historic city is crammed full of listed buildings, being largely saved from any German bombing during the second world war, due to Hitler wanting to use it as the country’s future capital. Oxford University is the oldest university in the English speaking world. Some believe that it goes back to 1096 although the original date is unknown. The city, which was formed in the 8th century lies at the confluence of the river Thames, where it is known as the Isis, and the Cherwell. There are several suburbs and neighbourhoods within the borders of the City of Oxford, including Jericho, made famous in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials books, Osney, Risinghurst, Headington and Cowley. The latter being the former location of British Leyland and Rover. Cars have been made there since 1913 when William Morris started making them. The company flourished and became a major force between the 1920’s and 50’s. Currently the Mini is made there by BMW.
There are many notable buildings including Bodleian Library, built in 1602, The Sheldonian Theatre, from 1664, Oxford Town Hall, built in 1987 and The Clarendon Building is an early 18th-century neoclassical building of the University of Oxford, built from 1711.
The city is governed by Oxford City Council which is based in Oxford Westgate Library, 2nd floor, 228 The Westgate, Queen Street, Oxford OX1 1PE. The council is a non-metropolitan district, with county-level functions passed up to Oxfordshire County Council. This was formed like many others in 1974, to provide district level services.
