It’s classed as a ceremonial county and is governed by Durham County Council. Durham was founded in AD995 and has a rich history with tales of King Canute and the Kingdom of Northumbria. From 1974 the county was divided into eight districts; Chester-le-Street (including the Lumley, Pelton and Sacriston) Derwentside (including Consett and Stanley), City of Durham (including Durham and surrounding areas). Easington (including Seaham and Peterlee), Borough of Sedgefield (including Spennymoor, Sedgefield and Newton Aycliffe), Teesdale (including Barnard Castle and the villages of Teesdale), Wear Valley including Bishop Auckland, Crook, Willington, Hunwick, and the villages along Weardale),
Borough of Darlington, including Darlington and villages.
After 1995 this was consolidated down to the boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees, with Durham being added in 2009. The area relied on coal production through the 19th and most of the 20th century and was hit hard when production was scaled back in the late ’70’s.
Notable buildings include Durham Castle, Rokeby Park, Escomb Saxon Church and the famous Beamish living museum, which tells the story of life in the North East of England during the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s and 1950s.
Durham County Council operates County Hall, Aykley Heads, Durham, DH1 5ULm and this is where all matters concerning the county’s developments take place, including the local planning authority. This is where Durham planning permission is granted.
