Bolton is a large town located in the North-West of England. It is part of Greater Manchester and is historically a part of the county of Lancashire. Bolton was formerly a mill town and was a large textile production centre, dating back to when the Flemish weavers settled in the 14th century. During the Industrial Revolution Bolton was a boomtown, and at its peak had 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works. This made it one of the biggest cotton-spinning centres in the world. The First World War had a huge impact on the British cotton industry, leading to a sharp decline. It was the 1980s the cotton industry had virtually disappeared in the area. The area does have one notable professional football team, Bolton Town.
Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council is split into twenty areas. Each of the ‘wards’ elects three councillors every four years. The council was previously called the Bolton County Borough Council. Bolton Council is responsible for processing planning permission, planning applications and appeals in the borough.
As planning consultants, we work across the whole area including the main towns and villages of Astley Bridge, Barrow Bridge, Deane, Great Lever, Halliwell, Heaton, Lostock, Rumworth, Smithills, Tonge and Burnden.
