Luton is a town and a borough in Bedfordshire in the South of England. It’s known to many for it’s local airport being a popular hub for people going off on holiday. It is also known historically for its hat making industry (in fact the local football team, Luton Town is known as The Hatters) and as being the home to the Vauxhall car factory, which closed in 2002. The borough has a population of around 223,000. Luton town is the most populated in the borough followed by Dunstable. The borough extends to Bramington in north to Farley in the south, and from Lewsey to Wigmore going from east to west. Plande works right across the borough including the smaller villages of Biscott, Maidenhall and Putteridge.
Luton has around one hundred listed buildings, including Someries Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, in the Parish of Hyde, Luton Hoo, an English country house, built in 1767, and Wrest Park, a country estate located in Silsoe, with the main building constructed between 1836 and 1839 replacing the original residence which was built in 1639.
Luton borough council, also known simply as Luton Council, was formed in 1850, but in 1974, like many local councils was reconstituted as a non-metropolitan district council. The council convenes at Town Hall, George Street, Luton, LU1 2BQ, itself a listed building. This is where all Luton council planning permission, applications and appeals are processed.
